PEOPLE OVER BAILIFFS - FIX WELSH COUNCIL TAX!

The Welsh government is running a consultation on the administration and enforcement of council tax in the country. This is an opportunity for us to shape the direction of council tax collection. This includes the use of bailiffs, a long time enemy of ACORN members everywhere!

The situation is a dire one - in the last year, 1.2 million more people have fallen into council tax arrears. Across the UK, the total arrears was £7.5 billion in 2024. Households on the lowest incomes spend more than three times as much of their income on Council Tax as the richest. Tens of thousands of families are struggling to keep up with extortionate council tax rates, and bailiff companies are making millions from robbing them. We aren’t going to put up with these lowlife scum thinking they can rip us off. 

ACORN regional leadership have developed an ambitious response to the ongoing consultation and will seek to influence it as much as possible. We want to see an end to council tax, to bailiff use, and a system that supports people and doesn’t punish them. This consultation is a small part of a conversation, a campaign, and a fight that ACORN will win.
