Privacy policy

THE ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS FOR REFORM NOW LIMITED (ACORN) IS COMMITTED TO SAFEGUARDING THE PRIVACY OF OUR MEMBERS, SUPPORTERS AND WEBSITE VISITORS. WE BELIEVE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO PRIVACY. THIS POLICY SETS OUT HOW WE WILL TREAT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION. 

 

We collect information about you:

(1) When you give it to us DIRECTLY: 
You may give us your personal data when you sign an online form, paper form, or paper petition, or when you take part in an online action through DoGooder; when you share information about ACORN from our website on Facebook, Twitter and/or via email, when you apply for employment with us, when you apply to volunteer with us, when you contact us by phone, email, or post, when you buy anything from our online shop and/or when you donate money to us or contribute membership subscription. We use standardised paper sign-up forms and petitions that allow you to opt in and out of communication with ACORN. 

(2) When you give it to us INDIRECTLY:
Your information may be shared with us by others including users of our services, independent event organisers, other fundraising entities, sponsors and supporters of our organisation and services. Your information will also be provided to us when you follow us or otherwise interact with us on or via Twitter, when you like our pages or interact with us in other ways on or via Facebook, or when you like our pages or interact with us in other ways on or via Instagram. 

(3) When you give permission to OTHER ORGANISATIONS to share it or it is AVAILABLE PUBLICLY: 
We may combine information you provide to us with information available from external publicly available sources. Depending on your privacy settings for social media services, we may also access information from those accounts or services. We use this information to gain a better understanding of you and to improve our communications and fundraising activities.

(4) When you visit our WEBSITE
We use cookies to identify you when you visit our website and to enable us to personalise your online experience (for example by remembering your log-in details).


What information do we collect?
We may collect, store and use the following kinds of personal data:
(a) information about your computer and about your visits to and use of this website including your IP address, geographical location, browser type, referral source, length of visit and number of page views;
(b) information relating to any transactions carried out between you and us on or in relation to this website, including information relating to any contribution you make to us;
(c) information that you provide to us for the purpose of registering with us or signing a form or a petition or taking part in an online action e.g. your email address, phone number, address and other personal information given when you sign;
(d) information that you provide to us for the purpose of subscribing to our website services, email notifications and/or newsletters; and 
(e) any other information that you choose to send to us. 

Do we use cookies?
The ACORN website uses “cookies” to help personalise your online experience. A cookie is a text file that is placed on your hard disk by a web page server. Cookies cannot be used to run programs or deliver viruses to your computer. Cookies are uniquely assigned to you, and can only be read by a web server in the domain that issued the cookie to you. 
One of the primary purposes of cookies is to provide a convenience feature to save you time. The purpose of a cookie is to tell the web server that you have returned to a specific page. 
We use Google Analytics to analyse the use of this website. Google Analytics generates statistical and other information about website use by means of cookies, which are stored on users’ computers. The information generated relating to our website is used to create reports about the use of the website. Google will store this information. Google’s privacy policy is available at: http://www.google.com/privacypolicy.html. Our payment services providers may also send you cookies. 
You have the ability to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser settings to decline cookies if you prefer.

How will we use your personal data?
Personal data submitted to us will be used for the purposes specified in this privacy policy or in relevant parts of the website.
We may use your personal information to:
(a) administer the website;
(b) improve your browsing experience by personalising the website;
(c) enable your use of the services available on the website;
(d) send statements and receipts to you, and collect payments from you;
(e) send you general (non-marketing) communications;
(f) send you email, text and telephone notifications which you have specifically requested;
(g) send you marketing and fundraising communications relating to ACORN and our campaigns, which we think may be of interest to you;
(h) provide third parties with statistical information about our users – but this information will not be used to identify any individual user; and
(i) deal with enquiries and complaints made by or about you

Where you submit personal information for publication on our website, we will publish and otherwise use that information in accordance with the license you grant to us. 
We will not sell, rent or share your personal data with third party organisations.

Membership and donations: privacy and cancellation 
All our donations and membership subscription transactions are handled through our payment services providers (Stripe and GoCardless) and via Standing Order mandate. You should only provide your personal information to Stripe and GoCardless after reviewing their respective privacy policies. We will share information with Stripe and GoCardless only to the extent necessary for the purposes of processing payments you make via our website. We do not store your financial or credit card details. 

To cancel your subscription via GoCardless or Stripe you may submit a request by contacting [email protected]. Please allow 14 days for us to process your request. To manage a Standing Order subscription please contact your bank.

We have a refund policy in case you make a donation in error. If you contact us within 7 days of making the donation we will return it to you within 40 days without charge.

Other disclosures: 
In addition to the disclosures reasonably necessary for the purposes identified elsewhere in this privacy policy, we will disclose information about you only when required to do so by law.
Security of your personal data: 
We will take reasonable technical and organisational precautions to prevent the loss, misuse or alteration of your personal information. We store your contact information on our NationBuilder database (http://nationbuilder.com/). You are responsible for keeping your user details confidential.

Policy amendments
We may update this privacy policy from time-to-time by posting a new version on our website. You should check this page occasionally to ensure you are happy with any changes. We may also notify you of changes to our privacy policy by email.

Your rights: 
On receipt of proof of identity and a written request, you may have a copy of any information that we hold about you. Please e-mail [email protected]. Dealing with requests will the responsibility of the designated data protection officer. 

Third party websites: 
The website and occasionally our emails contain links to other websites. We are not responsible for the privacy policies or practices of third party websites. 

Unsubscribing: 
You may unsubscribe from ACORN at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in the footer of any email we send.
