Bus Franchising in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough

Nearly two years of campaigning ends in big win for ACORN Cambridge and local people

Deregulation and lack of public funding meant big profits for bus companies and cut routes, unreliable services and higher prices for passengers. So ACORN Cambridge voted to make it their main branch campaign back in October 2023.

After the vote members in Cambridge immediately got to work, launching a petition to demand bus franchising and met with the Deputy Mayor to push him on a timeline for a consultation. Given the Mayor ran on a platform including bus franchising they didn’t expect much resistance. Even so, members sent tons of emails to the transport committee urging them to vote for franchising and won! The Mayor launched the consultation and ACORN Cambridge collected 70 responses from local people as well as over 350 signatures on the petition.

Eventually the Mayor signed off on bus franchising and ACORN Cambridge declared victory.
