Every year Nottingham City Council refers thousands of cases of unpaid council tax to bailiffs, and ACORN Nottingham is calling on them to end this practice as a matter of urgency.
We have spoken to hundreds of people across Nottingham, including many who have had suffered shocking treatment from bailiffs. People across the country, including families with children, report aggressive and intimidating behaviour from enforcement agents hired by councils, who also add to peoples' debt by charging extortionate fees.
Other councils have scrapped the use of bailiffs in favour of ethical debt collection schemes, and we think Nottingham Council should do the same. During a cost of living crisis councils should be supporting residents, not calling round the bailiffs!
A few weeks ago we presented our petition of hundreds of residents calling on the council to scrap the use of bailiffs to collect council tax debt. But so far they have not responded to our demands or agreed to meet with us. So we are continuing with our campaign...
...and we need you! Join us on Thursday 10th August, 7pm - 9pm on Zoom to plan the next steps in our campaign to boot the bailiffs from Nottingham council once and for all!
We need as many members as possible behind this campaign, and all members, including new members, are welcome and encouraged to come. Please RSVP to this event if you are coming, and we will send you a link to join the Zoom call.
See you on the 10th!
