ACORN Bristol had a powerful year in 2023. We stood together and achieved so much. Here are some highlights:
- We stopped 13 evictions of our members
- We pressured 30 letting agents including CJ Hole to stop the practice of bidding wars
- We defended the council tax benefit in full, a vital lifeline for 23,000 of the lowest income families in the city - after council leaders claimed they had no alternative but to cut it!
We did this by coming together to make plans to pressure our targets, knock doors, talk to people at stalls, write to allies, and much more. And most importantly, we consistently demonstrated people power, whether that be lines of people blocking bailiffs at our members' front doors, turning up at our targets' offices or at council meetings to make sure our members' voices are heard.
This kind of collective action works, as we're proving time and time again.
Let's make 2024 another year to be proud of our union.
Come to our monthly members' meeting - New Year re-engagement edition - to find out how to get stuck into building our community union all across our city. It doesn't matter if you've been involved recently or not, and there are lots of ways to help out that are flexible around your time and skills.
Arrive on Monday 8th of January at 6.30pm for delicious soup, or 7pm for meeting start at Tony Benn House, Victoria Street, BS1 6AY.
