This is a massive win for ACORN members and our city, and comes as a result of the 'Save Our Toilets' campaign we launched when the council announced cost-cutting plans to close 18 public loos. This decision has since been reversed, but we'll keep the pressure on to make sure our public toilets are safe.
An ACORN spokesperson said: “These plans were obviously totally misguided but without the rapid response and hard work from Acorn members, the council may well have gone ahead anyway.
Public toilets are a basic necessity and councils shouldn’t see them as an expendable luxury. This isn’t just about public toilets - it’s about our ability to exist in and access our public spaces freely.
The successful campaign shows just how powerful we can be when we come together and take direction. If political parties won’t offer us change, then we will make it ourselves."
